However, there is so much to see and do in the area, that you will want to take much longer. As one visitor from Switzerland said: \u00a0&#8220;we were in &#8216;heaven&#8217;. You might know that a lot of people rave about the &#8216;Garden Route&#8217; in South Africa. Well, the scenic drive between Eureka and Bandon is THE MOST SENIC DRIVE I ever took! One of the best kept secrets in the world which we need to make available to everyone!&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"#north\">Traveling from South to North &#8211; Towards Portland and Seattle (click here)<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>If traveling towards the north, towards Portland, click <a href=\"#north\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"#south\">Traveling from North to South &#8211;<br \/>\nTowards San Francisco<\/a><\/h2>\n<h4>(see below)<\/h4>\n<p>If you are heading south, towards San Francisco, then here are itineraries for you (below):<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"south\" name=\"south\"><\/a>Driving South Towards San Francisco<\/h3>\n<h3>Part 1 Arriving at Reedsport<\/h3>\n<p>The first town is Reedsport, the heart of the amazing Oregon Dunes. Drive through the harbor onto Salmon Harbor Drive by the <a href=\"https:\/\/orcalcoast.com\/index.php\/reedsport-sightseeing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Umpqua Lighthouse<\/a> (plan for a tour) and the ocean views, back out onto US Route 101 South. The dunes are magnificent and this is the only way to see them (unless you have a horse). Hiking is possible but tedious in sand. Even if you have never ridden an ATV before, rent one. Solo, tandem or in a larger group.<\/p>\n<p><u>Where to Stay<\/u><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/orcalcoast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/dunes8-mentalfloss1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-452 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/orcalcoast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/dunes8-mentalfloss1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"140\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 200px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 200\/140;\" \/><\/a>Reedsport has several hotels \/ motels. Winchester Bay is quite small, but there are a couple of hotels there. North Bend \/ Coos Bay is the largest community on the coast and has several hotels, mostly at the southern end of the drive through town. Or, if it is still early enough in the day, head onto Bandon (<strong>but absolutely don&#8217;t miss Charleston<\/strong>!). There are a wide selection of <a href=\"https:\/\/orcalcoast.com\/index.php\/reedsport-camping\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RV Parks and campgrounds<\/a> north of Coos Bay and near Charleston.<\/p>\n<h3>Part 3 Coos Bay \/ Charleston to Bandon, Port Orford and Gold Beach<\/h3>\n<p>After North Bend \/ Coos Bay, follow the signs out to <a href=\"https:\/\/orcalcoast.com\/index.php\/sightseeing-coos-bay-charleston\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Charleston<\/a> to explore a part of the coast that those in a hurry will miss. Spend some time in the harbor area and explore the restaurants and fish markets. Then head south out of town towards <a href=\"https:\/\/orcalcoast.com\/index.php\/sightseeing-coos-bay-charleston\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shore Acres, Cape Arago Lighthouse and Cape Arago State Park<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/orcalcoast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/BayAreaSignIMG_0095.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-451 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/orcalcoast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/BayAreaSignIMG_0095.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"145\" height=\"101\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 145px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 145\/101;\" \/><\/a>Backtrack to Charleston, turn a hard right on 7 Devils Road and follow\u00a0it out to US 101. Continue south on US 101 into\u00a0Bandon. Park your car downtown and explore <a href=\"https:\/\/orcalcoast.com\/index.php\/bandon-oregon-sightseeing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Old Town Bandon<\/a> and wander along the docks. If you did not pick up lunch in Charleston, this is the place to do so.<\/p>\n<p>After lunch, head south. If you are still hungry, stop in the Langolois General Store and pick up a famous hot dog. Head down into the small quaint town of Port Orford (see side trips, below).<\/p>\n<p>After Port Orford, drive south towards Gold Beach being certain to stop at several of the roadside parking lots to enjoy the view.<\/p>\n<p>Distance: 100 miles (160 km), 2 hours and 45 minutes.<\/p>\n<p><iframe data-src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/u\/0\/embed?mid=1-uyNYWCZ63jN-upJw6GUHclCOsm3f-aC\" width=\"640\" height=\"280\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n<em>Zoom in with the &#8216;+&#8217; and click on places of interest. \u00a0 Red is Charleston area, blue is Bandon Area and brown is Port Orford to Gold Beach.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><small><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-align: left;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/u\/0\/viewer?mid=1-uyNYWCZ63jN-upJw6GUHclCOsm3f-aC&amp;ll=43.26332939809249%2C-124.48090944405538&amp;z=10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">View Larger Map<\/a><\/small><\/p>\n<p><u>Side Trips<\/u><\/p>\n<p>\u2022<a href=\"https:\/\/www.recreation.gov\/recreationalAreaDetails.do?contractCode=NRSO&amp;recAreaId=3100\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">South Slough National Estuary Reserve<\/a> is on the way from Charleston.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022For bird lovers, there is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fws.gov\/refuge\/bandon_marsh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bandon Marsh National Wildlife Refuge<\/a>, just north of Bandon.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022<a href=\"https:\/\/orcalcoast.com\/index.php\/bandon-oregon-sightseeing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Coquille River Lighthouse<\/a> is in Bullards Beach State Park, just across the river from Bandon. \u00a0This is a small lighthouse.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/orcalcoast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/thumbcapeblanco-clancy08.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-456 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/orcalcoast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/thumbcapeblanco-clancy08.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"125\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 100px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 100\/125;\" \/><\/a>\u2022Perhaps the <strong>best lighthouse on this part\u00a0of the coast<\/strong> is the <a href=\"https:\/\/orcalcoast.com\/index.php\/gold-beach-sightseeing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cape Blanco Lighthouse<\/a>. Hume in the Port of Gold Beach.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022Plan on spending half the day or longer in Gold Beach for an exciting jet boat trip up the Rogue River.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022Drive east from Gold Beach to visit the tiny town of <a href=\"https:\/\/orcalcoast.com\/index.php\/gold-beach-hiking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Agness<\/a>. \u00a0Or at least head upriver to the first bridge, cross it and return on the north side of the Rogue.<\/p>\n<p><u>Where to Stay<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Bandon has several very nice hotels, some near Old Town, others further south along the coast with ocean views. Port Orford has a small hotel and a unique charming &#8220;Guest Habitat&#8221;, while Gold Beach has several motels with views of the ocean or the Rogue River.<\/p>\n<p>There are RV parks and campgrounds near <a href=\"https:\/\/orcalcoast.com\/index.php\/camping-rvs-near-coos-bay-charleston\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Charleston<\/a>, just north of <a href=\"https:\/\/orcalcoast.com\/index.php\/bandon-oregon-camping\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bandon<\/a>, at <a href=\"https:\/\/orcalcoast.com\/index.php\/gold-beach-camping\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cape Blanco<\/a> and along the Rogue River near <a href=\"https:\/\/orcalcoast.com\/index.php\/gold-beach-camping\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gold Beach<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Part 4 Gold Beach to Brookings and onto Crescent City<\/h3>\n<p>From Gold Beach, continue south on US Route 101.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/orcalcoast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/thumbcapesebastian-punderson.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-457 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/orcalcoast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/thumbcapesebastian-punderson.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"145\" height=\"101\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 145px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 145\/101;\" \/><\/a>Visit the top of <a href=\"https:\/\/orcalcoast.com\/index.php\/cape-sebastian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cape Sebastian<\/a>, just a few miles south of town. Continue south through Pistol River, one of the most photographed sections of the coast, and onto the <a href=\"https:\/\/orcalcoast.com\/index.php\/sightseeing-near-brookings-oregon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor<\/a>. Be certain to stop at Arch Rock and the Natural Bridge.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/orcalcoast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/thumbthundercove2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-460 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/orcalcoast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/thumbthundercove2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"145\" height=\"101\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 145px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 145\/101;\" \/><\/a>Continue through Brookings and, immediately after crossing<br \/>\nthe Chetco River, turn right for a loop around Harbor, then back out to US 101. Continue south and say goodbye to Oregon and enter California. Turn left on CA Route 197, then left onto US Route 199, then right onto Howland Road and drive through<a href=\"https:\/\/orcalcoast.com\/index.php\/crescent-city-redwoods\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Jedediah Smith Redwood State Park.<\/a> Exit the park, turn left and back out to US Route 101.<\/p>\n<p>Distance: 70 miles (110 km), 2 hours<\/p>\n<p><iframe data-src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/u\/0\/embed?mid=1wtlKwj4ZGrxwVSY3eRqYn5II9viaX8kR\" width=\"240\" height=\"280\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; Turn east, then turn right onto Howland Hill Road through <a href=\"https:\/\/orcalcoast.com\/index.php\/crescent-city-redwoods\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jedediah Smith Redwood State Park<\/a> (a well maintained dirt road). Enjoy your drive through the park. On leaving, drive to the end, then turn left onto US 199 and return to Crescent City. Or if you have completed your Crescent City visit, turn left on US 199 and turn right on OR 197 until it ends. If you have not already seen the <a href=\"https:\/\/orcalcoast.com\/index.php\/crescent-city-redwoods\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Redwoods at Jedediah Smith State Park<\/a>, do so before you leave. If you are ready for lunch, there are several excellent small restaurants in Harbor.<\/p>\n<p>On leaving Harbor, turn left to go under US Route 101, then right at a stop sign, to return on 101 north. Boardman State Scenic Corridor<\/a>. This portion of the drive is one of the most scenic in the world. Be certain to stop at Natural Bridge and Arch Rock.<\/p>\n<p>Continue north through Pistol River, one of the most photographed sections of the coast. If the weather is good, visit the top of <a href=\"https:\/\/orcalcoast.com\/index.php\/cape-sebastian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Cape Sebastian<\/a>, which is a must see. There are several hotels in Brookings and Harbor.<\/p>\n<p>Gold Beach offers several hotels \/ motels. There is ample public <a href=\"https:\/\/orcalcoast.com\/index.php\/gold-beach-camping\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RV and tent camping<\/a> near Port Orford and several private RV campground near Gold Beach.<\/p>\n<p>Port Orford (which is about 25 miles to the north of Gold Beach) has a small hotel and a unique charming &#8220;Guest Habitat&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Part 3<\/strong> Gold Beach &#8211; Port Orford to Bandon<\/h3>\n<p>After Gold Beach, continue north on US Route 101. Drive north and look out at the beach at Ophir to look for whales. Continue north up around Mount Humbug, then burst out into the open just south of Port Orford and enjoy the view. North of Port Orford, the road swings away from the coast. Note the cranberry bogs along the road.<\/p>\n<p>Just south of Bandon, turn left onto<br \/>\nBeach Loop Road (see the map for details) and follow to 7th, then onto 4th, then left onto Edison and follow to 1st street. Park and enjoy Old Town Bandon.
